Ngogo Chimpanzee Project. November 4, 2019.

This painting was donated to the Ngogo Chimpanzee Project to help raise funds for their efforts to end poaching and conserve the chimpanzees in Uganda.
The story behind the painting, according to the Ngogo Chimpanzee Project:

"The saddest, most horrifying news came out of Ngogo today. Ngogo Chimpanzee Project Co-Director Kevin Langergraber was out with almost all of the Ngogo Easterners today when he heard what he called terrible screams. He thought the chimps must have encountered an animal but when he got close, he saw poachers and 15-20 dogs. He yelled at the poachers, which scared them off, and jumped in to fight the dogs off Kidman and her juvenile male Jumbo. It was then that he saw a spear sticking out of Kidman's back. He pulled it out and started spearing the 10+ dogs now attacking Jumbo to get them off him. Kevin fought them until they eventually gave up and Jumbo was ale to get away. It's uncertain whether he will survive with his injuries, but at least he has a chance. No news on Kidman's 3-week old infant, which dogs grabbed, but she may have been picked up by other chimps in the group. She's so little that her chances of surviving even if that happened are slim. And the worst, saddest, most upsetting news - Kidman died. Kevin stayed with her body until the Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers arrived to lead the search. They arranged for local police officers with tracking dogs to join them in these efforts. This is a first for us and we're all shaken up and trying to process this terrible news."

An update to this story: Kidman's infant was found dead in the arms of another chimpanzee, Evans. Jumbo survived.
